In the late Qing Dynasty, Princess Yunjing was abandoned by her husband, Shen Yifu, on their wedding night and died of a broken heart six months later. She is reborn ten years later in the Republic of China as a young girl named Lin Yunzhi. Determined to control her own fate, she moves to Shanghai for studies, only to reunite with Shen Yifu, who is now a university supervisor. Suspicious of her familiar behavior, Yifu tests her repeatedly. Meanwhile, Yunzhi is caught in the Lin family's turmoil: her brother's oil research is targeted by many, and the mysterious death of her eldest sister remains unsolved.
